About this specimen

A honey-gold barite crystal no bigger than a grain of maize sits alone near the middle of a snow-white quartz plate, and the whole composition hangs on it. The plate itself curves like a shallow dish, paved edge to edge with small white quartz terminations; a second speck of yellow clings to the upper rim.

Barite is barium sulphate, BaSO4, and the first thing collectors notice about it is the weight — a specific gravity around 4.5 makes it feel wrong in the hand for something so soft, Mohs 3–3.5. Jiangxi produces these warm amber crystals perched on white quartz, and the appeal is the restraint: one crystal, deliberately placed, against a plain field.

Small at 3.6 cm × 3.0 cm × 1.8 cm and 35 g. Shown resting on white putty on a clear acrylic block. The single barite you see in these frames is the single barite in the box.
