琥珀金色的重晶石晶體散落在一層白色糖粒狀石英殼上，是矮胖厚實的個體，晶面明亮如玻璃，最大者約 6 mm。埋得較深的幾顆看似半溶入白色晶殼之中；挺立在邊緣的那些，則會在轉動標本時閃出光芒。下方的白色晶殼結晶細密，為整個表面鋪上一層低調的閃爍。
重晶石是硫酸鋇，BaSO4，而它的破綻在於重量：鋇使它明顯比其下生長的石英更緻密，收藏者單憑手感便能把重晶石晶體與外觀相近的方解石區分開來。它很軟，莫氏硬度 3 至 3.5，那些晶稜在裸露的層架上容易磨損，因此請為它準備有內襯的盒子或帶軟墊的擺放位置。
