層層堆疊的瓣狀結構賦予這朵沙漠玫瑰小葫蘆般的輪廓，而它表面的每一平方毫米都由彎曲的片狀晶體緊密旋疊而成。顏色由燕麥色至淺沙色，生長時吞入沙漠地表顆粒之處顯得更深，而片緣則保持較潔淨的奶油色，沿細緻的稜脊反射光線。
這種玫瑰花狀的形態，直接源自石膏（CaSO4·2H2O）結晶的環境：在潮濕的沙中，每一片生長中的晶片都必須穿過並繞過砂粒，最終通體含砂而非清澈透明。正是這些被困住的砂，使沙漠玫瑰看來霧面無光，而潔淨的石膏晶體則呈玻璃光澤。石膏摩氏硬度僅 2——指甲即可留下刻痕——且微溶於水，因此這是一件只能除塵、絕不可水洗或浸泡的標本。
