這件標本乍看完全不像晶體：它是一團渾圓的瘤狀突起與稜脊，表面最新鮮處呈乳白色，染上鐵質處轉為焦糖褐，堆疊成介於珊瑚與花椰菜之間的模樣。轉動它，那些球瓣會在光下泛出柔和而粉質的高光——這正是貴州收藏者口中的爆米花石膏，也就是葡萄狀形態。
葡萄狀生長發生在結晶同時從表面許多點開始的時候，每個中心都以球形向外擴張，直到球與球相遇。內部的石膏依然是纖維狀並呈放射排列；那些球體只不過是纖維長到沒有空間的地方。石膏成分為 CaSO4·2H2O，莫氏硬度 2——軟到用指甲就能留下痕跡，也最喜歡遠離潮濕。
