Über diese Stufe
Übereinandergestapelte Lappen geben dieser Wüstenrose die Silhouette eines kleinen Kürbisses, und jeder Quadratmillimeter ihrer Oberfläche ist aus gebogenen Blättern aufgebaut, die einander in engen Wirbeln überlappen. Die Farbe reicht von Haferflocken bis blassem Sand, dunkler dort, wo Körner des Wüstenbodens beim Wachstum verschluckt wurden, während die Blattkanten in saubererem Creme bleiben und das Licht entlang feiner Grate auffangen.
Die Rosettentracht folgt unmittelbar daraus, wo Gips (CaSO4·2H2O) auskristallisiert: in feuchtem Sand, wo jedes wachsende Blatt sich durch und um die Körner schieben muss und am Ende durch und durch sandig statt klar ist. Dieser eingeschlossene Sand ist der Grund, warum eine Wüstenrose matt aussieht, wo ein sauberer Gipskristall glasig wirken würde. Gips hat Mohshärte 2 – ein Fingernagel hinterlässt eine Spur – und er ist schwach wasserlöslich: eine Stufe zum Entstauben, niemals zum Waschen oder Einweichen.
Mit 3,8 × 2,3 × 2,3 cm und 20 g ist sie mit Knetmasse auf einen klaren Acrylblock gesetzt. Genau so fotografiert, wie sie ankommen wird, Sockel inklusive.
