Über diese Stufe
Auf den ersten Blick hat dieses Stück nichts von einem Kristall: Es ist eine Masse gerundeter Knoten und Grate, cremeweiß dort, wo die Oberfläche am frischesten ist, und karamellbraun, wo Eisen sie gefärbt hat, aufgetürmt zu etwas zwischen Koralle und Blumenkohl. Dreht man es, fangen die Lappen das Licht in weichen, kreidigen Glanzlichtern – jener traubige Habitus, den Sammler in Guizhou Popcorn-Gips nennen.
Traubiges Wachstum entsteht, wenn die Kristallisation auf einer Fläche an vielen Punkten zugleich einsetzt und sich jedes Zentrum kugelig nach außen ausdehnt, bis die Kugeln aneinanderstoßen. Im Inneren ist der Gips weiterhin faserig und radial; die Kugeln markieren nur, wo den Fasern der Platz ausging. Gips ist CaSO4·2H2O mit Mohs 2 – weich genug, dass schon ein Fingernagel Spuren hinterlässt, und am liebsten trocken aufbewahrt.
Die Masse misst 5,1 × 4,8 × 3,3 cm und wiegt 54 g; präsentiert wird sie auf dem klaren Acrylwürfel der Abbildungen. Was abgebildet ist, verlässt auch den Laden.
