이 표본에 대하여
가느다란 에메랄드 주상 결정 하나가 이 작은 덩어리의 앞면을 비스듬히 가로지릅니다. 다져진 눈처럼 보이는 희고 거친 결정질 모암을 배경으로 옅은 민트그린을 띱니다. 결정은 길이 약 2 cm의 납작한 기둥으로, 색은 중앙에서 가장 짙고 양 끝으로 갈수록 옅어집니다. 위쪽 가장자리 가까이에서 더 짧은 두 번째 초록 판상 결정이 표면을 뚫고 나오며, 바닥에는 어두운 운모질 반점이 자리합니다.
에메랄드는 크로뮴 또는 바나듐이 색을 입힌 녹주석 변종으로, 화학식은 Be3Al2Si6O18이며 바로 이런 방식으로 육방주상 결정으로 자랍니다. 정동 속에 홀로 서는 대신 모암에 갇힌 채로 말입니다. 모암에 남아 있는 결정은 떨어져 나온 결정보다 더 많은 것을 말해 줍니다. 무엇이 결정을 길렀고 그 주위에서 무엇이 자랐는지 읽을 수 있기 때문입니다. 경도 7.5에서 8이므로 결정 자체는 단단하고, 약한 쪽은 둘러싼 모암입니다.
