잉크처럼 짙은 푸른 결정들이 이 작은 표본의 가운데를 채우고, 결정면이 서로 나란해지는 곳마다 짧고 단단한 광채를 던집니다. 파란색이 옅어지는 자리에서는 선명한 풀빛 초록 펠트가 이어받아, 속까지 다공질로 벌집처럼 뚫린 거친 갈흑색 철광석 위를 군데군데 덮으며 뻗어 갑니다. 표본은 파란 면이 앞을 향하도록 투명 아크릴 블록에 세팅되어 있습니다.
남동석과 공작석은 하나의 과정이 보여 주는 두 얼굴입니다. 둘 다 이차 구리 탄산염으로 남동석은 Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, 공작석은 Cu2(CO3)(OH)2이며, 산소를 머금은 물이 구리 광체를 따라 아래로 스며들 때 만들어집니다. 남동석은 물을 더 받아들이면서 자신의 파란색을 공작석의 초록에 내어 줍니다. 한 표본에 둘이 함께 있다는 것은 그 변환이 한창 진행되는 순간을 붙잡았다는 뜻입니다. 둘 다 단단하지 않아 모스 경도가 대략 3.5에서 4 정도이며, 볕이 드는 창가보다 건조한 간접광이 더 잘 맞습니다.
