About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with quartz, mica and feldspar at 7.3 cm and 143 g; a small cabinet piece, priced with the damage disclosed. A clear quartz prism rising from a base of sugary white feldspar with pale aquamarine and mica beside it; the supplier notes the quartz is damaged.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle. Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 4.6 × 4.8 × 7.3 cm (1.81 × 1.89 × 2.87 in) and 143 g (5.0 oz). Disclosed condition: damage to the quartz. The price reflects it and the photographs show the affected area. Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
