About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with quartz and mica at 7.6 cm and 190 g; a small cabinet piece. A clear quartz prism standing at the centre of a block of grey mica with pale aquamarine crystals at the top, the quartz glassy and complete.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three. Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

The piece is small cabinet in size, 4.2 × 5.9 × 7.6 cm (1.65 × 2.32 × 2.99 in) and 190 g (6.7 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
