About this specimen
Inner Mongolia, bismuthinite with quartz at 5.2 cm; a small cabinet piece. Pale quartz crystals run along the length of the piece with dark metallic bismuthinite set among them, the sulphide showing as grey blades between the brighter crystal faces.
Bismuthinite is bismuth sulfide, forming lead-grey striated needles; it is uncommon in good crystals.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
The Huanggangliang skarn district of Inner Mongolia is one of the great mineral finds of the 21st century, known for fluorite, calcite, garnet and rare species.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 5.2 × 2.9 × 1.6 cm (2.05 × 1.14 × 0.63 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
