About this specimen
Powder blue, and not a colour that turns up often in a mineral case: a rounded hemisphere of fine upright blue crystals covers most of the face of this Yunnan thumbnail, its surface velvety and slightly furred where the crystal tips break the outline. Beneath and behind it the matrix is grey-white and botryoidal, with a seam of black oxide crusting the left shoulder and a faint blue wash bleeding down into the pale rock.
Sodalite is normally met as massive blue rock, sawn into slabs and tumbled into beads, so a specimen where the blue arrives as a crystalline rosette with a radiating, fibrous texture is a very different proposition. The chalky surface picks up finger oil readily and will not clean easily afterwards — handle it by the grey matrix and keep it away from damp.
The thumbnail is 3.0 × 2.4 × 3.7 cm and 33 g, seated on putty on the clear acrylic cube seen in the photographs, which were taken of this individual piece.
