About this specimen

Almost black at first glance, this small malachite column resolves under light into a stack of tight green-black bulbs with a low silky sheen. The colour everyone expects is there, but it is hiding: a break on the lower right has opened a window of pure emerald, and in it you can see the fibres standing on end, radiating out from the centre of the bulb they built.

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide, Cu2CO3(OH)2, and it grows exactly this way — fibre by fibre, outward from countless separate starting points — wherever copper-bearing water seeps through carbonate rock. The dark outer skin is simply the weathered face of those same fibres. At Mohs 3.5–4 it scratches easily and acids attack it outright, so no ultrasonic cleaners and nothing sharper than plain water on a brush.

A true thumbnail: 3.0 × 1.5 × 0.8 cm, 5 g, standing on putty on a clear acrylic base. The photographs were taken of this exact piece, emerald window included.
