About this specimen
Two penguins carved from Brazilian banded agate stand side by side, each with a crystalline surprise: the carver centred both bellies on natural geode cavities, so sparkling quartz druse shows where the tuxedo would be. Caramel and cream agate banding wraps their heads and wings, no two bands alike, and the carved feet and beaks are finished with real character.
This is lapidary work, not a natural formation — and good agate carving lives or dies on how the artist uses the stone’s own patterns. Here the banding and the geode pockets are the design, which is exactly how it should be done.
The pair together measures about 17.5 × 7.1 × 11.4 cm and weighs a substantial 2.8 kg. Sold as the set of two; the photographs show the exact pair.
