About this specimen
Dimensions: 13.0 × 13.0 × 13.0 cm (5.12 × 5.12 × 5.12 in); longest edge 130 mm (5.12 in).
Red fire quartz, known in China as hong jiaohua, owes its colour to hematite inclusions, and this big Brazilian sphere shows them beautifully. A broad band of golden-yellow inclusion clouds sweeps around the lower half like a horizon, while bright red flakes and a soft coral patch hang in the clear crystal above it, so the whole sphere reads like a sunset landscape.
The quartz between the inclusions is clear and bright, and the sphere is polished to a mirror finish; the white glare in the photos is a window reflection. With a diameter of 13 cm / 5.1 in and a weight of 3085 g / 108.8 oz, this is a serious display sphere that needs a sturdy stand.
- Material: Red fire quartz (clear quartz with hematite inclusions), polished sphere
- Locality: Brazil
- Size: Diameter 13 cm / 130 mm / 5.12 in
- Weight: 3085 g / 3.08 kg / 108.82 oz / 6.8 lb
