About this specimen

Knobs of chalk-white gypsum bulge and overlap across this Guizhou crust, and wherever the white skin thins or breaks, a toffee-brown granular layer shows through beneath. The texture is closer to a bunched cauliflower head than to anything obviously crystalline — rounded, matte, faintly sugary, with deep folds running between the lobes.

Gypsum, CaSO4·2H2O, is Mohs 2: a fingernail will mark it and warm water will slowly take it apart. Popcorn habits like this one grow where the mineral precipitates quickly from thin films of solution instead of building free crystals, so what you are holding is a crust of countless tiny grains rather than a few large blades. Keep it dry, and dust it with air rather than cloth.

The piece measures 5.0 × 4.7 × 3.2 cm and weighs 55 g, set with grey-lilac tack on a clear acrylic block. The specimen photographed here is the specimen you receive, block included.
