About this specimen

Dozens of fine needle sprays fan upward from a rusty brown spine, each one opening like a sheaf of wheat: white at the tips, warming to apricot where the crystals thicken. The brown core beneath is bladed and iron-stained, and it makes the pale fans look brighter than they are — a small object that behaves like a much larger one under a lamp.

Gypsum is hydrated calcium sulphate, CaSO4·2H2O, and at Mohs 2 it can be scratched with a fingernail; needle habits are the most fragile form it takes. Acicular sprays grow in open cavities where crystallisation is slow and unconfined, so each needle keeps its direction from nucleation all the way to the tip. Dust it with a soft blower rather than a brush, and never wash it — gypsum is slightly soluble in water.

Compact at 3.0 × 2.3 × 2.3 cm and just 10 g, the spray perches on the small clear acrylic cube visible in the photographs. Nothing here is a stock image: this is the cluster you receive.
