About this specimen

Dioptase this saturated reads almost black until light finds a way inside and the green ignites. Two separate colonies of it have taken hold on a buff, sugary matrix. The larger group builds a low mound of stubby, sharply terminated prisms; the smaller one to the left runs as a loose chain, single crystals standing alone on the rock with pale mint dustings of finer growth between them.

Dioptase is a hydrated copper silicate, CuSiO3·H2O, and copper supplies that green — the same element behind malachite’s green and azurite’s blue. It forms in the oxidised upper levels of copper deposits, and Congo material has long been the standard against which dioptase colour is judged. Mohs 5 sounds forgiving, but the mineral has good rhombohedral cleavage and the terminations chip without much provocation.

7.9 × 4.3 × 6.9 cm and 235 g, with both crystal groups on one broad face and a plain back that lets it lie flat or lean. Photographs are of this piece exactly as it sits, matrix and all.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive the exact specimen shown?

Yes. Every specimen is a single, one-of-a-kind piece, and the photographs show the exact item you will receive — never a stock photo.

Is this Dioptase natural?

Yes — specimens like this form naturally. As is standard in the trade, some pieces are gently cleaned or trimmed; we photograph the actual specimen and describe its origin and condition conservatively.

How is it packed and shipped?

Orders ship worldwide with fully insured, tracked delivery, carefully packed to protect fragile crystals. A display base is included.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
