The Katanga Copperbelt

The Copperbelt of southern DR Congo is one of the richest copper-cobalt regions on Earth. Its deeply weathered, oxidised orebodies produce some of the most intensely coloured secondary copper minerals known.

The Congo is the classic source of emerald-green dioptase, botryoidal malachite, and pink cobaltoan calcite and dolomite, along with shattuckite and plancheite. Congolese dioptase and malachite are benchmark specimens.
