About this specimen
DR Congo cobaltoan calcite at 3.5 cm; a miniature. Cobaltoan calcite in a strong rose pink covers the whole face of the plate in a fine crystalline crust, with one small dark patch breaking the colour near the centre.
Cobaltoan calcite carries cobalt in the lattice, which turns ordinary calcite a hot pink to magenta; the Congo material is the world standard.
The Katanga Copperbelt of DR Congo is the world's premier source of malachite, dioptase, chrysocolla and cobaltoan calcite.
By size it is miniature, 3.5 × 2.8 × 1.3 cm (1.38 × 1.10 × 0.51 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
