About this specimen
Half of this tower is glass and half is rubble, and that contrast is the whole point of it. The polished front runs smoky amber-grey and translucent, tapering to a four-sided point, while the left flank has been left as it came out of the ground: a sage-green crust pocked with cavities and streaked rust-orange where iron has soaked into it.
Calcite (CaCO3) is Mohs 3 and cleaves perfectly in three directions, so working a 15 cm obelisk out of it is patient work — press too hard and the piece parts along a rhomb face instead of taking polish. Held against a lamp the body glows warm brown and its internal veils and growth planes step forward, while the untouched crust stays flatly opaque.
