About this specimen
Green and white run through this skull in broad bands, as if the block had been chosen precisely for the argument between them: green floods the brow, the cheek and the row of blocky teeth, while chalky white sweeps over the crown and down the nose. At the back of the cranium a crescent-shaped cavity opens into a lining of small white crystals — an original pocket in the rough, left exposed instead of being cut away.
Fluorite is a demanding thing to carve. At Mohs 4 it yields quickly, but it splits along four octahedral planes, and one careless pass can take a flake off a nose or an orbit. The straight-edged blocks visible in the teeth of this piece are not tool marks — they are the mineral’s own cubic structure reading through the finished surface.
The carving is 12.7 × 6.9 × 7.6 cm and weighs 2466 g, close to 2.5 kg, so it wants a solid shelf. It was photographed on a dark reflective sheet and ships without a stand; the skull you see is the skull you receive.
