About this specimen
Yunnan, gibbsite with azurite at 4.9 cm; a miniature. Azurite in an electric blue crusts the top of a brown rock, with green copper staining and pale gibbsite filling the hollows to either side of it.
Gibbsite is aluminium hydroxide; the Chinese material forms botryoidal blue-green crusts coloured by trace copper.
The saturated blue of azurite stands out among the common minerals, and Chinese and Congolese material now sits alongside the classic Moroccan finds.
Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.
By size it is miniature, 4.9 × 2.5 × 1.2 cm (1.93 × 0.98 × 0.47 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
