About this specimen
A chalky robin’s-egg blue has grown over everything on this Guizhou specimen. Beneath the coating you can still read the shapes it buried — blunt olive-tan blocks and pyramids pushing up through the crust — while the surface itself stays matte and soft-looking, faintly fibrous where the gibbsite spread in feathery sheets. Taller than it is wide, it leans a little, which gives it a tower-like profile.
Gibbsite, Al(OH)3, is the mineral that makes bauxite worth mining for aluminium: abundant in the ground, and almost never seen in a cabinet. Crystallised, display-quality material is genuinely uncommon, and the blue tint is what makes this one worth looking at twice. It is soft, roughly 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, and the pale coating dulls under finger oils — hold it by the base and dust it dry rather than washing it.
It stands 12.5 × 7.5 × 5.7 cm, weighs 184 g, light for its bulk, and shows best upright; no stand is included. The photographs are of this gibbsite and no substitute.
