About this specimen

Sheaves of stubby calcite prisms burst from a dark, iron-stained matrix in rosettes, each bundle splaying open at the tip like a head of blossom. The colour is not gold but a pale celadon — sage-cream, waxy and translucent, with ochre dust caught in the crevices between crystals. From the front the specimen reads as a low bank of flowers; from the side, as a forest of blunt columns leaning outward.

Calcite (CaCO3) is trigonal, Mohs 3, and known for perfect rhombohedral cleavage and a brisk fizz in dilute acid — which is exactly why a piece like this should never meet vinegar, cleaning sprays or a hard knock against a shelf edge. The radiating habit comes from repeated nucleation on a common footing, each new crystal splaying a few degrees off its neighbour until the bundle opens into a fan.

It stands 10.2 cm tall and 10.2 cm across, 5.1 cm deep, and weighs 465 g, sitting square on its own matrix without a stand. The images were shot from the specimen offered here, not from a sample of the lot.
