About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, quartz with mica and aquamarine at 7.3 cm and 198 g; a small cabinet piece. A plate of golden-tan mica rosettes with quartz crystals stained golden by iron and an aquamarine the supplier lists, left uncleaned in its natural state as the supplier notes.

Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 7.3 × 6.6 × 4 cm (2.87 × 2.60 × 1.57 in) and 198 g (7.0 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
