About this specimen

Chalk-white lobes overlap across the face of this small gypsum, each one wrinkled with fine concentric ridges and dusted in the hollows with rust-orange iron oxide. The outline is a flattened rosette about the size of a walnut, matte and opaque where most gypsum is glassy: there is not a single crystal face to find on it, only accretion piled on accretion.

Gypsum is CaSO4·2H2O and sits at Mohs 2 — a fingernail will scratch it, and a wet cloth does worse, since gypsum is faintly soluble and goes dull if it is washed. The popcorn habit comes from slow build-up out of thin films of mineral-charged water rather than free growth into an open cavity, which is why the surface is made of rounded shells instead of planes.

4.6 × 3.3 × 3.8 cm, 51 g, putty-mounted on a clear acrylic cube for the photographs. The piece pictured is the piece you get.
