About this specimen
One half of this piece is a face; the other half is the cavity it came out of. The front has been carved into a skull — deep orbits, a hollowed nasal opening, a blocked-out row of square teeth — in grey, sugary quartz veined and blotched with ochre. Behind the cheekbone the lapidary stopped, and the geode wall survives as it grew: cream and tan knobs of crystal with colourless quartz points among them, the rough zone reading like cropped hair.
Working a geode this way is a one-attempt job: the cutter has to guess where the vug wall runs before the first pass, then bring the face forward far enough to hold an expression without breaking through into the hollow. Quartz sits at Mohs 7 and takes detail well, but the drusy zone is the vulnerable half — crystal tips will snap under a fingernail, so handle the skull by its solid front.
It stands 11.9 × 7.1 × 9.1 cm and weighs 1247 g, a little over 1.2 kg. Photographed on a dark reflective surface with no stand; the skull in these images is the one that will be boxed and sent.
