About this specimen

Two angelfish swim one behind the other out of a single block of labradorite here, their bodies cut in overlapping planes and their fins scored with fine parallel grooves. Turn the piece into the light and a broad sheet of electric blue floods the foremost body, with a second peacock eye of flash lower down; everything else reads as smoky olive-grey shot through with black. The carver left the outer rim ragged, so the polished fish appear to break out of raw feldspar.

That blue is not pigment. Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar whose interior separated, as it cooled, into ultra-thin alternating lamellae; light entering the stone reflects off those layers, interferes with itself, and throws back one narrow band of colour that shifts and vanishes as you move. At Mohs 6 to 6.5 it takes a bright polish but dislikes knocks along its cleavage.

The carving is 10.2 × 8.9 × 3.0 cm and weighs 350 g, with a flat-cut base that lets it stand unaided. These photographs were taken of this one piece — the flash pattern is unique to it.
