About this specimen
Half of this block was carved and half was left exactly as it came out of the ground. The front is a milky white quartz elephant — trunk curled under, ear laid back in low relief, a single small dark stone inset for the eye — and behind the shoulder the sculpture simply stops, giving way to a rough field of quartz crystal faces stained rust and pale amber.
The contrast works because the material does not change: Mohs 7 in the snow-white massive front and in the clear crystallised rear alike, one mineral treated two ways. The orange on those crystal faces is iron oxide deposited by groundwater long after the quartz itself grew — a coating on the surface rather than colour locked inside the stone, which is why it stops abruptly at the carved edge.
A weighty display piece at 10.4 × 10.2 × 6.4 cm and 800 g, shown in hand to give a sense of scale. Each photograph shows this elephant and not a similar one.
