About this specimen
One doubly terminated quartz crystal, brilliant and internally sparkling, sits solitary on a long bar of sandy-tan matrix — a natural ring setting, the stone mounted by geology itself. Faint amber wisps of iron staining drift through the otherwise clear interior, and the crackle of internal reflections gives the crystal its diamond flash.
These “Herkimer-style” crystals from Daocheng, Sichuan, grew floating in soft pocket clay, which is how both terminations stayed needle-sharp. The composition here — one crystal, one plinth — makes it the rare specimen that displays itself.
It measures 9.4 × 3.3 × 6.1 cm overall and weighs 184 g. The photographs show the exact specimen.
