About this specimen

This Daocheng crystal is terminated at both ends, with no scar of attachment anywhere on it, and a smaller quartz grips it from beneath. Its interior is anything but empty: black carbon flecks scatter across the body, and where they thin out silvery veils take over — healed fractures that turn into thin mirrors as the piece rotates.

Quartz grown free-floating in a clay-lined cavity forms faces all the way around instead of rooting into matrix, which is why Chinese material of this style gets compared to the New York originals. The dark inclusions are carbonaceous matter sealed in during growth; the veils are old fractures the crystal repaired on itself, and both are the opposite of flaws — they are the record of how it grew. Mohs 7 makes it one of the few species in a cabinet that can be handled without anxiety.

5.1 × 3.0 × 3.3 cm, 45 g. These photographs record this crystal and no other, and the acrylic cylinder with its removable putty mount travels with it.
