About this specimen

Two milky quartz points rise from a low crust of smaller crystals, the taller one frosted almost to opacity along its prism faces while the termination clears just enough to catch a highlight. Along the left flank a compact group of pyrite sits half-buried in the quartz, its stepped metallic faces reading close to black against all that white. A fringe of slender secondary points runs around the base and down one side.

Milkiness in quartz is not a flaw but a census: countless microscopic fluid and gas inclusions trapped during quick growth, scattering light back before it can pass through. At Mohs 7, SiO2 is the one mineral here you can handle without anxiety — the pyrite is what wants care, since sulphides object to damp air far more than they object to fingers. Keep the piece dry and it will hold its metallic surface.

The cluster measures 6.6 × 3.6 × 5.3 cm and weighs 100 g. Photographed in hand and offered without a base, this is the piece that ships; the points and the pyrite patch in the images belong to it alone.
