About this specimen

A chain of salmon-pink rhodochrosite rhombs zigzags across this small plate like stepping stones, each crystal furred with a sugary white overgrowth that rounds off its edges. Only the largest, up at the top left, stays clear enough to show the deep watermelon core underneath; the rest read as pale rose against the grey quartz druse they perch on.

Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate, MnCO3, and the pink comes straight out of the manganese in the structure rather than from any trace impurity. It is soft, Mohs 3.5 to 4, with perfect cleavage in three directions, so a dropped rhomb splits along a flat plane instead of chipping. Look along the right-hand edge and a single violet fluorite crystal has grown into the druse, with brassy sulphide specks nearby and a dark mineral crust holding the opposite corner.

The plate is 4.8 × 1.3 × 3.6 cm and 35 g, thin enough to read as a slice, propped upright on a clear acrylic block. What you see photographed is what leaves the shelf.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
