About this specimen

Scatter embers over fresh snow and you have the effect of this Moroccan plate: cream-white barite blades paved edge to edge, sprinkled with vanadinite crystals barely a millimetre or two across, each a stubby hexagonal barrel with mirror faces that throw back a hard orange-red glint. Where the barite warms to amber near the margins the red almost vanishes against it, then returns the instant the plate is tilted.

Vanadinite, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, is a lead vanadate of the oxidised upper levels of lead deposits — the vanadium arrives late, carried in groundwater long after the primary ore was in place. It crystallises hexagonal and is soft at Mohs 2.5 to 3, so dust it with a soft brush and keep it well away from an ultrasonic cleaner. The barite blades beneath grew first and gave the vanadinite its perch.

The plate runs 10.2 × 7.4 × 2.5 cm and weighs 230 g, and no base is fitted. Photographed as it is, and this exact plate is the one that ships.

Will I receive the exact specimen shown?

Yes. Every specimen is a single, one-of-a-kind piece, and the photographs show the exact item you will receive — never a stock photo.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
