About this specimen
One crystal carries this miniature. A squat, water-clear quartz lies almost flat across a brecciated tan matrix, wide enough through the middle that its terminal faces read as broad plates rather than points. Its interior is crossed by pale feathery films and a scatter of dark specks, and a second, much smaller point pushes out of the rock beneath it. The host is a jumble of angular pale fragments cemented in brown, seamed with white and cream.
Those feathery films are healed fractures — breaks that opened while the quartz was still growing and were resealed by fresh silica, leaving a thin skin of trapped fluid to mark the old surface. They are structural history rather than damage, and they give a clear crystal like this something to hold the eye under a lamp. Quartz is Mohs 7 with no cleavage, so the crystal is robust; the matrix is the softer half.
The specimen measures 4.1 × 3.0 × 3.3 cm and weighs 30 g. It comes on the clear acrylic cube shown, held with removable putty, and the crystal photographed is the crystal supplied.
