About this specimen
A gemmy apple-green fluorite rides the upper right of this piece, its points knocked flat into broad triangular faces and clear enough to read light through. A second crystal sits lower and to the left, greyer and cloudier, half-buried in cream feldspar. Everything else is tourmaline: coal-black striated prisms, some standing proud as blades, the tallest broken into a silvery splintered face.
Black tourmaline with green fluorite on cream feldspar is one of Namibia’s best-known combinations, the three crystallising together in granite cavities. The hardness gap matters here: tourmaline runs Mohs 7 to 7.5 and will scratch fluorite at Mohs 4 without effort, and here the two are in direct contact. Fluorite also cleaves perfectly, so pack it firm.
The specimen measures 12.7 × 8.4 × 8.9 cm and weighs 545 g, an upright piece that reads best from the front, green crystal near eye level. It is raw and unpolished, exactly as collected, with no base fitted. The specimen in the pictures is the one that will arrive.
