About this specimen

Jiangxi red quartz with chalcopyrite at 279 g; a cabinet piece with two lustres. A cluster of pale red-pink hematoid quartz crystals with brassy chalcopyrite grains scattered through and a grey base.

The red comes from included hematite, and the effect is strongest where the crystals are thinnest.

Chalcopyrite is the main ore of copper, forming brassy tetrahedral crystals that tarnish to iridescent blues and purples.

Jiangxi is China's tungsten province; its mines have yielded wolframite, scheelite and fluorite specimens of world standard for decades.

By size it is cabinet, 9.8 × 6.8 × 4.4 cm (3.86 × 2.68 × 1.73 in) and 279 g (9.8 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
