The gold on this small Hunan plate is a druse of pyrite crystals barely larger than grains of sugar, spread over rounded cream dolomite. A few bare dolomite crystals push through the brassy coating, giving the piece its texture and contrast. 4.1 × 1.8 × 2.8 cm, 25 g.

About this specimen

Look closely and the gold here is not a scatter of cubes at all: it is a druse of pyrite crystals barely larger than grains of sugar, spread over a bed of rounded cream-white dolomite. The coating follows every knob and hollow of the carbonate beneath it, so the plate glitters in an olive-brass tone that shifts with the smallest turn, while a handful of bare dolomite crystals push up through the crust like pale pebbles.

Fine pyrite druse of this kind forms late, when cooling sulphide-bearing fluids wash across carbonate that has already crystallised — which is why the pyrite copies the dolomite surface so faithfully. Pyrite is FeS2 at Mohs 6 to 6.5, hard but chemically restless: store it somewhere dry and away from damp cotton wool, since humidity is what starts sulphide decay.

The plate runs 4.1 × 1.8 × 2.8 cm and weighs 25 g, shown resting on a clear acrylic block with white putty. Every photograph in this listing was taken of this one piece.
