About this specimen
One flash of peacock gold does most of the work here. The body of the piece is a close-packed druse of small milky quartz crystals, grey-lavender in shadow, near-white where light catches them; on the upper right a fan of creamy blocky calcite breaks the texture, and dark patches show through the quartz in places. Set into the quartz at the upper left is a single chalcopyrite crystal in gold and violet iridescence, with a few smaller specks of the same near the lower edge.
Hubei’s polymetallic deposits routinely bring quartz, calcite and copper-iron sulphides together like this, the sulphides early and the carbonate last. Chalcopyrite’s colours are a thin surface tarnish film rather than the mineral’s own hue, and rubbing will take them off. Calcite is Mohs 3 against quartz at 7, so clean gently enough for the softest thing present.
It measures 3.8 × 2.3 × 3.8 cm and weighs 30 g, standing on a clear acrylic block with white putty behind it. This is the specimen in the photographs, down to the last crystal.
