About this specimen
A seahorse cut from the wall of a quartz pocket: the head and long snout are carved smooth, while the whole body has been left exactly as it came out of the ground, a dense field of small white crystal points that reads convincingly as scale and armour. The dorsal line was shaped so that individual quartz terminations stand in for the spines along the crest, and a single black onyx bead sits in the eye.
What makes the piece work is the decision to cut into a druse plate rather than into solid rock. The vug that opens through the lower body is a natural cavity the maker chose to keep, rusty iron staining and a nest of crystal tips still inside it, and the colours stay in the cream-to-tan range throughout — warm rather than icy.
Measuring 10.2 × 2.5 × 6.4 cm and weighing 300 g, it is presented upright in a brass wire cradle on a steel post and clear acrylic base, included. Every photograph on this listing was taken of this individual carving.
