About this specimen
Rust and clove-brown iron oxide is trapped in flat sheets inside these quartz crystals, so the group reads warm peach rather than water-clear. Half a dozen prismatic individuals stand shoulder to shoulder, the tallest carrying a broader head above a narrower stem in the scepter manner. Faces are bright and undamaged, and the internal planes flare as you turn the piece against the light.
The Haramosh massif in Gilgit-Baltistan is high, cold, alpine-cleft country, and its quartz commonly carries this kind of iron dusting taken up from the host rock while the crystals were still growing. Quartz is SiO2, trigonal, Mohs 7 — hard enough to be handled without anxiety, which is not true of most things sharing a cabinet with it.
Small enough for a miniature shelf at 3.6 × 2.8 × 4.3 cm and 45 g, the group is putty-mounted on a clear acrylic block that lifts the terminations to eye level. Every photograph here is of this crystal group and no other.
