About this specimen

One quartz crystal, upright and alone on a slab of ochre clay, does all the work on this Lanwen piece. The termination is bright and sharply faced, glass-clear where the light passes through it; below that the prism darkens steadily, filling with dark inclusion clouds and rusty films, and a dusting of the same yellow clay still clings where the crystal grew into the seam.

Quartz is trigonal and Mohs 7, durable enough to outlast the collapse of everything around it, which is why crystals from clay-filled pockets like this one come out intact while the host rock crumbles to mud. The dark internal veils are mineral matter caught up during growth — a record of what was suspended in the fluid at the time. The soft matrix is the fragile half of this piece: keep it dry and do not scrub it.

Overall 9.4 × 5.1 × 8.4 cm, 119 g. The photographs document this single crystal and its clay plate, which serves as its own base.
