About this specimen
Amber-gold barite crystals lie scattered across a pale sea-green fluorite plate like beads dropped on frosted glass. The barites are tabular and glassy, the largest close to a centimetre, each one a warm honey-orange against the cool green; between them runs a sparkling dusting of colourless micro-crystals that catches light in drifts. Inside the fluorite the cube edges survive as soft geometric ghosts, with faint violet zoning at the left and lower margins.
The sequence is legible: fluorite first, as a cube-on-cube plate, then barite crystallising on top of it as the fluids changed. Barite is BaSO4, only Mohs 3 to 3.5 and surprisingly heavy for a pale mineral, while the fluorite beneath is CaF2 at Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage. Nothing on this plate is polished, coated or reconstructed — it came out of the ground looking like this.
