About this specimen
One long, water-clear quartz blade leans out of this small Yaogangxian cluster like a raised arm, with a dense thicket of shorter points filling in behind it. Most of the crystals are colourless and internally clean; scattered among them sit half a dozen smoke-brown individuals, dark enough to read as shadows between their pale neighbours.
Smoky colour in quartz comes from natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium in the SiO2 framework, which is why smoky and colourless crystals so often share a single pocket — the brown ones simply grew nearer a radioactive mineral in the vein. Yaogangxian is better known for its fluorite, and quartz of this kind comes up alongside it in the tungsten workings.
4.6 × 2.5 × 3.8 cm and 35 g, light enough to turn over in one hand. The photographs were taken of the specimen itself, in hand, with nothing else added to the frame.
