About this specimen

Moroccan baryte-vanadinite-aragonite at 113 g; a cabinet piece with three species. Lead vanadate present: wash hands after handling.

Baryte (barite) is barium sulfate: heavy for its size, soft, and prone to tabular or bladed crystals with a bright vitreous lustre.

Vanadinite forms red to orange-brown hexagonal plates and barrels with a resinous lustre; the Moroccan material from Mibladen is the classic. Aragonite is chemically the same as calcite but crystallises differently, which is why it builds sprays and columns instead of blocky rhombs.

Moroccan vanadinite from the Mibladen district is the world standard for the species, prized for red colour and sharp hexagonal form.

By size it is cabinet, 9.7 × 5.7 × 2.7 cm (3.82 × 2.24 × 1.06 in) and 113 g (4.0 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Contains lead-bearing minerals: wash hands after handling and keep away from children and pets. Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
