About this specimen
A diagonal seam of blood-red hexagons runs across this small wedge of Moroccan sandstone, each vanadinite crystal a squat six-sided tablet two to five millimetres wide with a mirror-bright basal face. Where the crystals thin out the rock takes over: dusty rose sandstone freckled with black dendritic manganese oxide, and a rusty band of iron staining beneath the richest growth.
Vanadinite is lead chlorovanadate, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, and it forms only where a lead deposit has been slowly oxidised near the surface, the vanadium generally arriving from the surrounding host rocks. Mibladen, near Midelt in the Middle Atlas, is the classic address for it. The crystals are soft at about 3 on the Mohs scale and brittle at the edges, so turn it under a lamp rather than passing it around.
The plate is 3.3 × 3.3 × 3.3 cm and weighs 25 g. It comes mounted on the clear acrylic block shown, held by a pad of green museum putty that lifts away cleanly. What you see photographed is the specimen that ships.
