About this specimen
Nothing on this Xianghualing piece has grown as a smooth cube. Every fluorite face climbs in fine ledges and terraces, so the light breaks into steps across it; the interiors run blue-green, while the tops of many crystals are frosted silver-grey by a dusting of dark micro-crystals. At the right-hand end the fluorite gives way to a cream-coloured sugary quartz crust that closes the plate off.
Stepped growth of this kind records interruption: each ledge marks a pause in the supply of fluorine-rich fluid, after which the crystal restarts slightly inside its previous edge. Xianghualing, in southern Hunan, is a tin-polymetallic system, and its fluorites often arrive wearing exactly this sort of dark, sparkling overgrowth. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage — the corners are the vulnerable part, so lift the piece by its matrix.
