About this specimen

Kunming, Yunnan, vivianite at 2.1 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Vivianite darkens in light: keep it out of direct sunlight and store it in the dark.

Vivianite forms in reducing environments — clays, fossil bone beds and the oxidised parts of sulfide veins — and its blades are soft and easily bent, so it is kept in the dark and handled by the matrix.

The phosphate and copper deposits around Kunming in central Yunnan yield vivianite, messelite and the secondary copper minerals of the Dongchuan belt.

By size it is thumbnail, 2.1 × 1.9 × 1.5 cm (0.83 × 0.75 × 0.59 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
