About this specimen
Yaogangxian wolframite with fluorite and mica at 16 g; a miniature of the mine's tungsten ore.
Wolframite is the iron-manganese tungstate that made Chinese tungsten deposits famous; it forms heavy, black, bladed crystals with a submetallic lustre.
Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.
Yaogangxian Mine in Yizhang County is China's most famous mineral locality, a tungsten mine that has produced fine fluorite, arsenopyrite, quartz and cassiterite for three decades.
By size it is miniature, 3.7 × 2.8 × 2 cm (1.46 × 1.10 × 0.79 in) and 16 g (0.6 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
